How To Write A Dissertation: Basic Tips And Examples

What is a dissertation?

A dissertation is a piece of words that commands your knowledge, analyzing skill and coherent thinking on a specific topic. A dissertation paper is mainly given as a task during the final year of a grad-course. A well-written paper will score you brownie points in the final evaluation as well as during job interviews.

Four basic tips and examples to write a greater dissertation paper-

  1. Narrow down your topic first
  2. Before putting together your paper, you must think it out clearly that a vast topic will only jeopardize your flow-of-work. Also, during the course of writing, time and again you need to lay your hands upon various materials and there is a limit on what you can source from the internet and from the institutional library. Ex- if you are writing a paper on religious studies, then a topic like ‘religion and Greek mythology’ will feel like an ocean. Better you tweak it out into something such as- ‘the significance of animal sacrifice in Greek religion and its origin in mythology’.

  3. Formulating a great title
  4. Once you zero upon the topic of your paper, you must brainstorm much to give it a great title. The title should be such as it compels the reader to find out what lies inside. Suppose, you are a student of English literature and you are given the task to create a paper on Hamlet. Now if you simply choose the title of ‘Hamlet- the Shakespearean tragic hero’- it will fall flat on its face in terms of appeal. A good example would be- ‘claustrophobia and corruption in the state of Denmark- The study of Hamlet’.

  5. Define the outline
  6. Once cementing the topic and the title, it’s the outline of the paper- that matters a lot. Each university has its own specific format. Some include thesis statement and others don’t. Check out the departmental site if the format is uploaded there. If not, then ask your mentor to guide you through this. Ex- a standard format for a paper includes these main chapters- title, acknowledgement, pages of content, introduction, thesis statement, body part, conclusion, and reference page.

  7. Maintain regularity
  8. Maintaining regularity in terms of writing every day, creating a time-schedule and taking necessary breaks are mandatory in your journey. Creating a paper is a tedious task and you need some amount of routine in your life- in order to succeed. Ex- writing at least 100 words everyday to not losing the flow and rewarding yourself once you have achieved the benchmark of 500 words are some of them.
